Welcome to the Kākau Mea Nui Project Web Site

Literacy is critical to success in the 21st century, and students who learn to write well are more successful within and after school. Waimānalo Elementary and Intermediate School Teachers/Staff are partnering with project staff from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and ALU LIKE, Inc. on a school-wide effort to improve the writing skills of students in grades K-8. The project focuses on increasing teachers’ skills in implementing culturally responsive, evidenced-based writing practices and strategies which support explicit writing instruction (Learning to Write) and increased writing opportunities (Writing to Learn).
