Ready, Set, Go! : National Service Inclusion Project

Project Overview

Ready, Set, Go! is a National Service Inclusion Project for adults with disabilities who want to learn more about themselves and community service opportunities while gaining valuable job-enhancing skills. Specifically, participants will be involved in self-development classes and service membership opportunities at an AMERICORPS site and a one-to-one mentorship with a trained mentor. The project will run for six months from April to September 2003. Each participant will progress at their own pace. The project will assist up to eleven adults with disabilities who are students and members of the community.

The self-development classes begin in April at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and will end with a mid-term party in late June. Participants will then move on to AMERICORPS membership opportunities from July to September. Upon graduation, each participant will move on to a job, to national service, or to another opportunity of their choice.

Participants earn a stipend, an education award and a monthly bus pass for their efforts. Each member is encouraged to be as involved as they would like to be beyond the classroom and work sites. They can serve on the Ready, Set, Go! Advisory Board and/or be trained to become a mentor themselves. They can use this mentor training for their own enrichment or they can use these skills to mentor new participants should the project be funded for a second year.

The project involves a partnership between the University of Hawaii at Manoa Center on Disability Studies and Pathways UHM Service Learning Project. It is a collaboration between the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Hawaii Mentoring Initiative, Winners at Work, and community volunteers. The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is a training and technical assistance provider on the inclusion of people with disabilities. NSIP is a cooperative agreement (#01CAM0016) between the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston, and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities.
