VSA arts of Hawaii-Pacific is pleased to announce the call for entries for the 2009 VSA arts International Young Soloists Award, which recognizes outstanding young musicians with disabilities. Four Hawaii winners will receive $250 (cash prize, mentoring, performance opportunities). The local non-profit is an affiliate of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and a community partner of the University of Hawai‘i Center on Disability Studies, College of Education and the Hawaii Department of Education.
Applications must be received by Nov. 15, 2008. For more information, contact Grace Wood / VSA arts of Hawaii-Pacific 808-697-1204 or email at mail@vsaartshawaiipacific.org. To download an application, visit www.vsarts.org.
Any individual musician, either instrumental or vocal, who has a disability and is 25 or under is eligible to apply. VSA arts welcomes applications from all musical genres, from country to jazz to classical to rap. Musical ensembles consisting of two to eight members are also eligible to apply, so long as each member is of appropriate age and at least one member has a disability.
“Through the VSA arts International Young Soloists Award, we identify talented young musicians across the state and provide opportunities for them to perform,” said Richard Walenta, president of the board of VSA arts of Hawaii-Pacific. “We are pleased to be a part of supporting and encouraging their professional endeavors at a young age.”
All entrants will be eligible for the 2009 VSA arts International Young Soloists Award in Washington, D.C., where they will compete with finalists nationwide. The two winners of that competition will receive a $5,000 cash award as well as a chance to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
