Hire Abilities
In January 2005, Hawai‘i was awarded a Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to increase competitive employment outcomes for people with disabilities.The project, called Hire Abilities Hawaii, represents an innovative collaboration among the Department of Human Services (DHS), University of Hawai‘i College of Education Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS), the Department of Education (DOE), the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of Labor (DOL) and its statewide Workforce Development Council. VSA ARTS Hawai‘i-Pacific
The mission of VSA arts of Hawai‘i-Pacific is to promote public awareness of the value of arts in the daily lives of people with disabilities, and to foster opportunities for the full inclusion and participating in all the arts by youth and adults with disabilities, especially the unserved and under served in Hawaii and the outer Pacific. Innovative and Sustainable Teaching Methods Program
The Center on Disability Studies (CDS), a University Center for Excellence, at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is excited about the Innovative and Sustainable Teaching Methods Program (IST) funded by the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) of the U.S. Department of Education. IST is a three year $900,000 grant.
IST was developed with faculty, students with disabilities, groups representing students with disabilities, disability support centers, and faculty development centers within the University of Hawai‘i (UH) system. The IST will (a) synthesize research and information related to priority areas of need in the provision of postsecondary education services to students with disabilities; (b) develop innovative, effective, and efficient teaching, accommodation and support strategies for faculty and administrators, impacting on attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary for students with disabilities to retain and complete their program of study; and (c) deliver professional development and training sessions, within a rigorous field-test design, with faculty and administrators throughout the UH system. Mentoring Partnership Project
The goals of MPP are to promote accessibility, inclusion, retention, and matriculation for students with disabilities at the post-secondary level and to increase the knowledge, skills, and awareness of faculty members related to disability issues and creating inclusive classrooms.
MPP will research and provide information relating to how students with disabilities and faculty members mentor one another. Examples of such partnerships led to this promising research avenue. Visit the MPP Web Site

“Workers with Disabilities: Talent for a Winning Team”
Throughout October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Office of Disability Employment Policy will profile on its Web site individuals who have personally benefited from agency-sponsored programs aimed at eliminating the chronic underemployment of people with disabilities, as well as employers and organizations that have successfully implemented strategies to hire, support, empower and otherwise value employees with disabilities.
