Center on Disability Studies (CDS)—20th Anniversary Celebration Year

The Center on Disability Studies at The University of Hawaii at Manoa (CDS), an Interdisciplinary University Center of Excellence (UCE) was founded during the summer of 1987, with initial funding provided by the Hawaii State Department of Health and the United State Department of Health & Human Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities.
July 1, 2007 marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the center’s 20 years of education, research, and service. A special series of events are scheduled for each month of the celebration including: a year long film series at the Honolulu Design Center, a weekly TV program entitled Disability Perspectives, (broadcast/online streaming information at http://www.olelo.org/) special forums, workshops and an anniversary banquet.
Over the years, the Center’s initiatives, projects and people have touched the lives of thousands of persons with disabilities and their families across the State of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin. Concurrently, hundreds of faculty, staff, and students have been mentored, trained, and prepared through CDS for lives and careers in support of persons with disabilities. A focus of the 20th Anniversary Celebration will be remembering the many people who have contributed to this milestone for The Center on Disability Studies.
