
Design Your Own Vacation Home!
*At the computer: *Before clicking on the links, read all of the directions.*
1) Click on following link to watch a Spy Guys lesson on area and perimeter.
2) Click on the following link to go to the website called "Area Explorer".
a) Read everything CAREFULLY.
b) Practice finding the area of several figures.
c) Copy your favorite figure on graph paper. Write the area and perimeter of the figure. Don't forget the units on each.
3) Click on the following link to go to the website called “Perimeter Explorer.”
a) Read everything CAREFULLY.
b) Practice finding the perimeter of several figures.
c) Copy your favorite figure on graph paper. Write the area and perimeter of the figure. Don't forget the units on each.
*As a final review,
4) Click on the following to test your new area and perimeter skills in the "Shape Surveyor Geometry Game!"
5) Click on the following link to play “Bucky’s Blueprints Perimeters and Areas Game!”
a) When you get to the website, choose a blueprint by clicking on one of the options (i.e. jungle gym, go- cart, barn, etc.).
b) Then, the “Registration” page will open. Do not register; instead click on the green “Maybe later” button.
c) Follow the directions on the bottom of the page to solve the area and perimeter of the blueprint you chose.
6) Now that you have shown mastery through graph paper drawings, you will design and draw the floor plan for a small house.
7) Then you will determine how much carpet you will need in two rooms and how much fencing you will need to go around your yard to make sure your dog doesn't get away while you are at school.
Congratulations! You are now an Architect!
*At home:
8) Measure the length and width of your bedroom and one other room in feet so that you will know what a normal room size is. The rooms you draw will be smaller.
*In the classroom (the next day): With a partner:
9) Compare the measurements you gathered at home.
10) Draw a house on 1 cm graph paper. Your house must have at least three rooms and a perimeter of at least 120 feet.
11) Figure out how many square feet of carpet you will need for 3 rooms. Show those measurements in the drawing of the room.
12) Draw the fence around the yard. How much fencing will you need? Include the unit.
13) Draw the front view of your house. Use markers or crayons to add color to your drawing!
