Hawai‘i Aquaponics Workforce Development and Cooperative Initiatives

Hawaii Aquaponics Workforce

Hawai‘i Aquaponics Workforce is developing a high-tech, innovative farm project on two urban plots in Kahului, Maui and Wai‘anae, O‘ahu. The two farms incorporate aquaponics greenhouse growing for the purpose of commercial food production, workforce development training and certification as well as agri-tourism, education and technology transfer.

A state-of-the-art greenhouse complex houses the integrated aquaponic growing systems, an agri-tourism technology showcase, a demonstration area and classroom for education and a packing area for the vegetables. Eight fish tanks raise large volumes of fresh water fish at densities up to ½ lb. of fish per gallon of water.

HAW will apply to be certified to raise tilapia, a hardy, fast-growing, freshwater fish that has become very popular as a food fish due to its mild flavor and flaky white meat.  The plant crops grown in the integrated systems will initially include fancy lettuces and common culinary herbs but the selection will likely expand with the addition of Asian herbs and greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and other fruiting crops.

HAWMW is collaboration with the University of Hawaiʻi Center on Disability Studies, the Lanikila Clubhouse in Wailuku, Maui and Ho‘omau ke Ola in Wai‘anae, O‘ahu.
