UH-CDS Partnership

The University of Hawaii–Center on Disability Studies (CDS) serves as a collaborator on the Consortium on Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and is involved in a number of projects under this subcontract including:

Development of Annotated Literature Review Gathered 140+ papers that met the inclusion criteria, abstracted, and documented the data elements included in the literature base. Access to Annotated Literature Review will soon be available on the Think College Web site: http://www.thinkcollege.net/
Plan and Implement Capacity Building Institutes (CBIs) Working with partners to further develop the following confirmed CBIs:
  • AUCD Conference CBI in Washington, DC (11/8/09): Focus on how UCEDD’s can partner with DDC’s)
  • CA CBI (3/1/10): Collaborating with Olivia Raynor and Wilbert Francis, UCLA, Tarjan Center (Focus on: Supporting Students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities in Postsecondary Education)
  • Hawaii CBI (4/14/09): Collaborating with Debra Hart and Cate Weir, UMass. (Topic: Transition to Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism)

In discussion with partners to develop CBIs at:
  • ICI Minnesota to host (tentative Spring 2010)
  • Autism Society (Possible CBI aligned with their annual conference)
  • Nashville, TN (tentative 4/10)

National, Regional, Local Presentations 12th International Conference on Autism, Intellectual Disabilities & Other Developmental Disabilities. Maui, Hawaii, on January 20 - 22, 2010. Dr. Robert Stodden to be noted speaker. Presentation will explore the impact of current policy (IDEA & NCLB Reauthorizations) upon practice when implementing a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in secondary school classrooms with students with significant disabilities. Discussion will focus upon legislative intent which has led to the development of numerous postsecondary education options for students with significant disabilities.
Council for Exceptional Children 2010 Convention & Expo, DDD Showcase Session, Nashville, TN, April 21-24, 2010. Dr. Robert Stodden will serve as the session leader for a panel discussion on intellectual disabilities and autism and postsecondary education.
National Survey Reviewed and provided input to the survey structure.
Sent notice out to more than 10 postsecondary education list serves and created links with more than 10 websites focusing on transition and postsecondary education.
Created a link to the home page of the CDS web site.
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities Completed negotiation and planning for a special issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities (ProEd) that is focused on postsecondary education and employment outcomes for students with Autism and DD. Dr. Robert Stodden serves as co-editor (with introductory paper) and two or more papers from the project have been developed and approved for submission in abstract form. Full papers were due in July 2009 and the special issue is scheduled for publication in Fall 2009.
Research to Practice Brief Publications Submitted article for publication to Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities- Special Issue, entitled: “Examining the Promise of Postsecondary Education for Students with Intellectual Disabilities in the United States.”
Presently collaborating with Thomas Doi, Counselor, University of Hawaii - Employment Training Center on an Information Brief on postsecondary education strategies and services for students with intellectual disabilities.

Had initial discussions with collaborators in the region as to the possible content and structure of the first case study.
Training and Technical Assistance Reviewed materials as provided from core center staff.
Upon request, will provide TTA for PacRim 2010 presenters.
Establish and Monitor PSE/ID Community of Practice Had initial discussion of topical areas for possible COP in PSE/ID.
